Gardens have always been a favorite subject for artists. Yet most of the works we are
familiar with are by men. Were women not painting them or sculpting them or
photographing them? Yes, they were. And this lecture will introduce the audience to
the intrepid “garden thirsty souls” who spent their lives in the shadows challenging the
male conceived notion that women could not be fine artists.
Using their words and images of their work reflected in paintings, glass art, ceramics,
needlework, fashion and sculpture, the audience will get to know the fascinating
personalities of these women, be introduced to the societal and economic challenges
they faced, and follow the circuitous routes they took to fulfill their passions for including
garden splendor in their art.
